Dry, dark and breathing. Wrap each good saree in soft cotton — an old dupatta or a muslin bag — never plastic, which traps damp and yellows silk. Fold zari and brocade inward so the metal does not rub. Keep a few silica gel packets or dried neem leaves in the wardrobe and change them after the monsoon.

Refold along different lines every two or three months; a saree folded the same way for a year cracks at the creases, and zari cracks first. Twice a year, air the sarees in shade for an afternoon — never in direct sun, which fades dye and dries silk brittle. Store cotton and silk apart, and nothing damp goes back into the cupboard.
