Cotton and Tangail· সুতি ও টাঙ্গাইল

First wash alone in cold water with a spoon of salt for twenty minutes; it settles the colour. After that, a mild detergent, cold water, no soaking for hours, no bleach. Dry in shade — direct sun fades the border first. Iron on medium while very slightly damp, or use starch if you like a crisp drape.

Silk, Katan and Benarasi· সিল্ক, কাতান ও বেনারসি

Dry clean. If you must wash at home, cold water, a drop of mild shampoo, a few minutes, no rubbing, no wringing, rolled in a towel to take the water out, dried flat in shade. Iron on the silk setting, always from the reverse, with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and any zari.

Jamdani· জামদানি

Dry clean the first two or three times. Later, a gentle cold hand wash is fine: never wring, never hang dripping — the weight pulls the motifs. Lay flat or over a clean sheet in shade. Iron from the back on low.

Storing· রাখার নিয়ম

Fold every saree in a clean cotton or muslin cloth, never in plastic, and never with naphthalene touching the cloth — it discolours zari and stains silk. Refold along different lines every few months so a crease never sets into the fibre. Keep zari sarees away from perfume and deodorant; spray before you drape, not after.

Once a year, unfold each piece and let it air for an hour in shade. That is the whole secret of a saree that outlives its owner.
