Tangail sarees come from the handloom villages of Tangail district, north-west of Dhaka. The classic piece is a soft cotton with a plain or lightly figured body, a narrow to medium border woven in a contrasting colour, and small butis scattered or set in rows. It is lighter and simpler than a Dhakai Jamdani and it is the saree most Bangladeshi women wear most days.

The weaving families — many of them the Basak community around Pathrail — also make half-silk Tangails and Jamdani-style pieces, so the name covers a range. What holds it together is the loom: a fly-shuttle handloom, a cotton or silk warp, and a weaver deciding the border and the butis by hand.

Soft cotton or half-silk· নরম সুতি না হাফসিল্ক

Soft cotton is the everyday Tangail: cool, absorbent, forgiving of a rickshaw and a washing machine on gentle. It looks its best after three or four washes, when the sizing has gone and the cloth falls close. Half-silk has a silk warp over a cotton weft: a gentle sheen, a firmer drape, pleats that hold. It is the small-occasion saree — a dinner, an office event, a family function where the Banarasi would be too much.

If you are buying one, buy cotton. If two, add the half-silk in a colour the cotton is not.

Pathrail and the named villages· পাথরাইল ও নামকরা গ্রাম

Pathrail in Tangail Sadar is the name buyers know, and "a Pathrail saree" stands for the finer end of the district's work — finer yarn, an even body, a clean border, motifs placed with care. Bajitpur, Chandi, Suruj and other villages weave in the same tradition. A shop that buys from Tangail can tell you the village; ask, and notice whether the answer comes easily.

Handloom or power-loom· হাতের তাঁত না পাওয়ারলুম

Power-loom copies of Tangail designs are everywhere and are not dishonest at their own price. To tell them apart: a handloom cotton has a slight, pleasing unevenness in the weave and in the spacing of the butis; the border joins the body with a soft, hand-set edge; the selvedge is firm and hand-finished. A power-loom piece is perfectly regular, the butis identical, the cloth often stiffer and glossier from finishing. Hold both to the light and the difference is plain.

Price is the other tell: a handloom Tangail is days of a weaver's work, and a price that undercuts that is buying something else.

The first wash and after· প্রথম ধোয়া ও তারপর

Wash a new Tangail cotton alone, in cold water with a pinch of salt; it will give up a little dye and a few inches of length and then settle. Dry in shade, iron slightly damp on medium. Wearing it· পরার কথা

A Tangail cotton wants a cotton petticoat and a cotton blouse — the outfit breathes as one. It pleats easily and the narrow border lets the pallu hang light over the shoulder. For office, class, a visit, a long bus journey, it is the saree that lets you forget you are wearing a saree, which is the highest thing that can be said of one.
