Tangail saree vs Dhakai Jamdani: what is the difference
দুটোই বাংলাদেশের হাতে বোনা শাড়ি, কিন্তু আলাদা জায়গার, আলাদা কৌশলের। টাঙ্গাইল শাড়ি বোনা হয় টাঙ্গাইলের তাঁতিদের হাতে — পাড়ে নকশা, শরীর হালকা, রোজকার পরার জন্য সেরা। ঢাকাই জামদানি বোনা হয় নারায়ণগঞ্জের দিকে, পুরো শাড়ি জুড়ে হাতে বসানো নকশা — বিয়ে, ঈদ বা বড় উপলক্ষের শাড়ি।
Where they come from· কোথা থেকে আসে
Tangail sarees are woven in Tangail district, north-west of Dhaka, by weaving families who have worked the pit loom for generations. Dhakai Jamdani comes from the villages along the Shitalakshya river around Narayanganj, the old muslin country south-east of the city.
How the design is made· নকশা যেভাবে হয়
A Tangail saree carries its character in the border (paar) and pallu, woven with extra warp threads, while the body is usually plain, striped or lightly figured. A Jamdani carries motifs across the whole body, each one inserted by hand with a supplementary weft as the cloth grows on the loom — the technique described in our guide to identifying real Jamdani.
How they feel and wear· পরতে কেমন
Tangail cotton is soft, breathable and light — the saree for a working day, a university day, or Pohela Boishakh. Half-silk Tangail adds a little sheen for a family occasion. Jamdani is finer and more formal; a dense one is a wedding or Eid saree and is treated as an heirloom.

Every day, gifts, Boishakh, office: Tangail. Wedding, reception, Eid morning, a saree to keep for years: Jamdani. Many customers own both, and many Tangail weavers now also make Jamdani-style motifs — ask which loom and which village a piece came from.

টাঙ্গাইল শাড়ি কি সুতি? · Are Tangail sarees always cotton?
Mostly cotton, but half-silk (silk warp, cotton weft) and soft-silk Tangail are also woven. The label in the shop says which.
কোনটা বেশি টেকসই? · Which lasts longer?
Both last for years with care. Cotton Tangail takes more washing; a Jamdani should be washed less and stored folded in cotton.
