How to wash and store a lungi so the colour holds
লুঙ্গি নষ্ট হয় ধোয়ায় নয়, রোদে আর ভুল সঙ্গীতে। প্রথম ধোয়াটা আলাদা, তারপর গাঢ় রঙের সঙ্গে, আর শুকানো ছায়ায় — এই তিনটে মানলে একটা সুতি লুঙ্গি বছরের পর বছর রং ধরে রাখে।
The first wash· প্রথম ধোয়া
Alone, in cold water, with a handful of salt stirred in first: the salt helps the dye set and the cold keeps it from running. Ten minutes, a gentle squeeze, a cold rinse. Batik and dark checks will tint the water — that is loose surface dye, not the colour leaving the cloth. Do this once and the lungi is ready to join the rest.
Every wash after· এরপর প্রতিবার
With dark colours, never with whites; a mild detergent, no bleach, no hot water; a short cycle or a quick hand-wash, because a lungi is not heavily soiled and long soaking only lifts dye. Silk-blend is hand-washed in cold water, pressed in a towel and hung straight, never wrung.

In shade, inside out. Direct sun is what fades a lungi — a batik hung on a roof through June is pale by August, and a check loses its contrast the same way. A line on a veranda or under a tin roof dries a cotton lungi in an hour in our weather and costs nothing in colour.
Ironing and folding· ইস্ত্রি ও ভাঁজ
Cotton: iron slightly damp on medium, along the length. Silk-blend: low heat, from the reverse, with a cloth between. Fold along the same crease each time so it hangs straight when worn, and keep the wearing lungis on a shelf that breathes rather than in a sealed bag.
When the colour has already faded· রং যদি জ্বলেই যায়
A faded cotton check can be re-dyed at home in a dark colour and gains a second life as a house lungi. A batik cannot be brought back; wear it soft and light, or make it the one for the shower. Buy the next one with shade drying in mind from day one.

In the first two or three washes a little running is normal; wash alone with salt and it settles. A lungi that keeps bleeding heavily was badly fixed and can be exchanged.
রোদে শুকালে কী হয়? · What happens if I dry it in the sun?
It fades — quickly for batik, steadily for checks. Shade drying is the single biggest thing you can do for a lungi's colour.
