Gifting a saree: how to choose for a mother, a wife, a sister
ভালো উপহারের শাড়ি সেটাই যেটা পরা হয়। তাই দামের আগে দেখুন তিনি রোজ কী পরেন, কোন রং বারবার ফেরে, পাড় সরু না চওড়া পছন্দ — আর ভুল হলে যাতে বদলানো যায়, সেই দোকান থেকে কিনুন।
Start from her wardrobe· শুরু তাঁর আলমারি থেকে
The saree that gets worn is the one that fits how she already dresses. Cotton every day means a fine Tangail or a cotton Jamdani will be worn out with pleasure; a wardrobe of silks kept for occasions means a Katan or a half-silk is the piece she would not buy herself. Look at three sarees she reaches for and buy in that family, a step finer.
Colour· রং
Her colour is the one that repeats. If you cannot check, maroon, bottle green and navy suit nearly everyone and every skin; off-white with a coloured border is the elegant safe choice for an older woman; a bright is a risk unless you have seen her in it.
For a mother or a mother-in-law· মা বা শাশুড়ির জন্য
Quality over show: a soft handloom cotton or half-silk with a narrow to medium border, in a colour she wears, that she can put on for a visit without feeling dressed up. Comfort and softness are the compliments; a heavy zari saree given to someone who does not wear zari sits in the cupboard.
For a wife· স্ত্রীর জন্য
This is where a Katan, a Banarasi or a dense Jamdani belongs — the saree for the next wedding you attend together. If she has told you a weave she loves, that is the whole answer. Add the blouse stitching as part of the gift: pay the tailor, or send her with the saree and the money.
For a sister or a friend· বোন বা বন্ধুর জন্য
Younger tastes run to lighter cloth and clearer colour: a half-silk Tangail, a cotton Jamdani in a fresh shade, an organza for someone who goes out in the evening. A piece that photographs well matters more here than a heavy border.
Practicalities· কাজের কথা
Check the blouse piece is included and roughly how much. Have it sent in the shop's wrapping, with the price removed on request. Buy where an exchange is easy — three days, unworn, tags on — so a wrong colour is an afternoon's errand, not a disappointment.
