বৈশাখের সকাল মানে রমনার বটমূল, মঙ্গল শোভাযাত্রা, পান্তা-ইলিশ আর হাঁটা — অনেক হাঁটা, চৈত্রের শেষ গরমে। তাই বৈশাখের শাড়ির প্রথম শর্ত সুতি, দ্বিতীয় শর্ত সাদা-লাল, তৃতীয় শর্ত আগে কেনা।
রং· The colour
White or off-white body with a red border is the Boishakh saree — the colours of the day, worn across the country from the fair at Ramna to a school in Rangpur. Red on white in a Tangail cotton, a cotton Jamdani with red butis, or a half-silk with a red pallu all read as Boishakh. A red saree with a white border is the reverse and just as right.
কাপড়· The cloth
Cotton, because the day is hot and long and mostly on foot. A Tangail soft cotton is the classic; a cotton Jamdani with open motifs is the dressed-up version. Half-silk if the day is indoors. Not silk, not organza, not art silk — by noon in April they are punishment.
কী এড়াবেন· What to avoid
Heavy zari (glare in daylight, weight in heat); a stiff new cotton that has not had its first wash (it fights the pleats); high heels on Ramna's grass. Wash the saree once, dry in shade, iron damp, and wear it with flat sandals and a cotton petticoat.
কখন কিনবেন· When to buy
Two weeks before. The last week before Boishakh every shop in Dhaka is asked for the same white-and-red saree, and courier runs fill. Order with time for the first wash and a fall if the saree needs one.
