Handloom cotton, every time: a Tangail soft cotton or a cotton Jamdani with open motifs. Both let air through, take up sweat and dry fast, and both get softer with washing. Lighter colours hold less heat; a narrow border weighs less on the shoulder.

Avoid silk and art silk between April and September unless the event is indoors and air-conditioned. Chiffon and georgette are light but do not breathe. A cotton petticoat under a cotton saree completes the outfit — a satin one under it defeats the point.
