পূজার পাঁচ দিনে পাঁচটা সন্ধ্যা আর অন্তত তিনটা শাড়ি — অষ্টমীর অঞ্জলি, নবমীর সন্ধ্যা, দশমীর সিঁদুর খেলা। লাল পাড়ের সাদা এই উৎসবের নিজের রং, আর ঢাকেশ্বরী থেকে পাড়ার মণ্ডপ পর্যন্ত সবখানে সেটাই দেখা যায়।

অষ্টমী ও নবমী· Ashtami and Nabami

White or off-white with a red border — the lal-paar — is the Puja saree: a garad silk if you have one, a cotton Jamdani with red motifs, a half-silk Tangail with a red pallu. Red and maroon sarees with gold work are the evening choice for the pandal, when the lights are on and the dhak is playing.

দশমী· Dashami

Sindoor khela is white by tradition — a white cotton or garad with a red border, because it will be marked and that is the point. Do not wear the silk you want to keep.

কাপড় ও আরাম· Cloth and comfort

Pandal-hopping is hours on foot in the last of the heat. Cotton and half-silk carry the days; silk and Katan carry the evenings. A fall and pico on every piece, flat sandals, a cotton petticoat under cotton.

কখন কিনবেন· When to buy

Two weeks before Mahalaya. Puja sarees sell out by pattern — the red-bordered white in particular — and the last week before the festival is the year's second-busiest after Eid.
