A fall is a strip of cotton about ten centimetres wide stitched inside the lower border along the length that touches the ground. It gives the hem weight so the pleats hang straight, and it takes the wear from floors and heels so the saree itself does not fray. It should match the border colour and be pre-shrunk.

Silk, Katan, Banarasi, chiffon, georgette and organza always need one. A heavy handloom cotton often drapes well on its own and can go with pico alone. If in doubt, put the fall in — it can be unpicked later, and a frayed border cannot be undone.
