A little, once. Handloom cotton relaxes in its first wash — a few inches along the length is normal — and then holds. Wash it alone in cold water the first time, with a pinch of salt to set the colour, and dry in shade. After that it can go in with the rest of the cottons on a gentle cycle.

Have the first wash before the tailor sees it: a fall stitched to unwashed cotton can pucker when the saree shrinks around it. The blouse piece shrinks the same way, so wash that too before it is cut.
