টাঙ্গাইল শাড়ি কী?

A Tangail is a handloom saree from the district of Tangail, north-west of Dhaka: soft cotton or half-silk, a plain or lightly figured body, a narrow to medium border and often small butis. It is the everyday saree of the country — the one worn to work, to the market and to visit family.

The weaving villages around Pathrail are the best known, home to the Basak weaving community whose sarees are sought by name. Tangail weavers also make Jamdani-style pieces, lighter and gentler on the price than a Dhakai Jamdani because the technique differs.

A good Tangail cotton is soft from the first wear and gets softer; a half-silk Tangail has a quiet sheen and is the usual choice for a small occasion.
