Blouse piece, fall and pico: what comes with a saree, and what to do next
নতুন শাড়ি হাতে এলে তিনটা কাজ বাকি থাকে: ব্লাউজ, ফল আর পিকো। কোনটা কী, কোন শাড়িতে দরকার আর দর্জিকে ঠিক কী বলতে হয় — জানা থাকলে প্রথম পরার দিন কোনো চমক থাকে না।
What is in the packet· প্যাকেটে কী থাকে
A saree is a length of cloth — most are around five and a half metres — and with most of ours comes a blouse piece: an unstitched length of matching or contrasting fabric, usually eighty centimetres to a metre, either woven on as an extension of the saree or folded in separately. The product page says which. A petticoat is not included; you match one to the saree's body colour.
Fall· ফল
The fall is a strip of cotton, about ten centimetres wide, hand-stitched along the inside of the lower border for the length that touches the ground. It does two jobs: it gives the hem weight so the pleats hang straight instead of flaring, and it takes the wear from floors and heels so the saree itself does not fray. It should match the border colour and be pre-shrunk cotton, or it will pucker after the first wash.
Pico· পিকো
Pico is the fine rolled edge stitched along the two raw ends of the saree so they do not unravel. It is a minute's work on a machine and it is the difference between a saree that lasts and one that loses a thread every wash. Any tailor who does falls does pico; ask for both in one visit.
Which sarees need them· কোন শাড়িতে লাগে
Silk, Katan, Banarasi, chiffon, georgette and organza: fall and pico, always. A heavy handloom cotton — a Tangail or a thick Jamdani — often drapes well on its own weight, and many people wear them with pico only. If in doubt, have the fall put in; it can be unpicked, and a frayed hem cannot be undone.
What to tell the tailor· দর্জিকে কী বলবেন
Ask for a cotton fall in the border colour, pre-shrunk, stitched by hand so the stitches do not show on the right side; pico on both ends; and, for the blouse, take the blouse piece and a blouse that already fits you — a tailor copies a fitting blouse far better than a list of measurements. In Dhaka a fall and pico is a day or two; a blouse is three days to a week, longer in wedding season.
Petticoat and the first wear· পেটিকোট আর প্রথম পরা
Match the petticoat to the saree's body, not its border — a wrong colour shows through a fine cotton or a sheer silk in daylight. Cotton petticoats breathe better under a silk in our weather; a satin one lets a stiff Katan glide. Before the first outing, try the whole thing on once with the shoes you will wear, so the length of the pleats is set for those heels and not for bare feet.

On silk and sheer sarees the pleats flare and the hem frays within a few wears. On a heavy handloom cotton you can often manage with pico alone, but a fall never hurts and can be removed later.

A day or two at most Dhaka tailors; a stitched blouse three days to a week, longer in wedding season. Order the saree with that in mind.
