From about a week to several months, depending on how dense the motifs are and how fine the yarn. Two weavers usually sit at one loom — a master and an apprentice — and in a day they may advance the cloth by only a few inches when the figures are close together.

A saree with wide-spaced butis on an open ground is the quick end. A piece where the motifs nearly touch, with a heavy pallu and a wide border on hundred-count cotton, is the slow end, and months are normal for it. That time is most of what you pay for.

Ask the shop how long a piece took. A shop that buys from weavers knows, at least roughly, and the answer tells you more about the saree than any label.
