How to drape a saree: the everyday Bangladeshi way, step by step
শাড়ি পরতে পাঁচটা কাজ — গুঁজুন, ঘোরান, কুঁচি করুন, আঁচল ফেলুন, পিন করুন। প্রথমবার দশ মিনিট, পাঁচবার পরে দুই মিনিট। ভুল হলে খুলে আবার — শাড়ি কিছু মনে করে না।
Before you start· শুরুর আগে
A petticoat tied firmly at the waist — it holds the whole saree, so tie it tighter than feels comfortable at first. The blouse on, the shoes on (the hem is set for those heels), two safety pins to hand. Fall and pico stitched. Stand in front of a mirror with room to turn.
Step one: tuck and turn· এক: গুঁজুন ও ঘোরান
Hold the plain end of the saree (the end without the pallu) and tuck its top corner into the petticoat at the right of the navel. Take the cloth once round the body from right to left, tucking the top edge into the petticoat as you go, keeping the hem just clear of the floor all the way round. You arrive back at the front with the rest of the saree in your left hand.
Step two: the pleats· দুই: কুঁচি
From the loose cloth, make five to seven pleats each about a hand wide, folding back and forth like a fan, holding them between thumb and fingers at the top. Even them so the edges line up, then tuck the bundle into the petticoat just left of the navel, pleats facing left, and pin them inside to the petticoat if you like. This is the step that takes practice; the fifth time it takes a minute.
Step three: the pallu· তিন: আঁচল
Take the remaining cloth round the back and bring it over the left shoulder from behind, so the pallu falls down the back to about the knee. Pleat it at the shoulder into a neat band a hand wide or let it fall open — both are worn — and pin it to the blouse at the shoulder with the second pin.
Step four: settle it· চার: ঠিক করুন
Pull the front pleats straight so they hang in a column; check the hem is a finger off the floor all round; adjust the pallu so the border shows along the arm. Walk a few steps and sit once: if anything pulls, retuck it now rather than at the door.
What goes wrong· যা ভুল হয়
Pleats coming loose: the petticoat is not tight enough, or the pleats were tucked too shallow — tuck a good two fingers deep and pin. Hem dragging: the first tuck was too low; start again a little higher. Pallu slipping: pin through pallu, blouse and bra strap together. A stiff new cotton fighting the pleats: it needs its first wash. Everything is fixed by undoing and doing again, and the saree does not mind.
