Tarnish. The metallic coating on zari reacts with damp air, sweat, perfume and the fumes that plastic bags give off, and darkens — first on the pallu and the folds. Tested (silver-gold) zari resists it longer; coated zari goes faster in a Bangladeshi monsoon.

Prevention is storage: wrap in cotton, keep dry with silica gel, fold zari inward, air in shade twice a year, and never put perfume on the saree itself. Once dark, a good dry cleaner can lift some of it with a gentle treatment; home polish or lemon will strip the coating and make it worse.
