First wash alone, in cold water with a handful of salt, to set the dye. After that, with dark colours in a mild detergent — no bleach, no hot water — and dried in shade, inside out. That last step is the one most people skip, and the sun is what fades a lungi, not the washing.

Silk-blend: hand-wash in cold water, no wringing, hang straight to drip. Iron cotton damp on medium; silk-blend on low from the reverse. A cotton lungi washed this way keeps its colour for its whole life.
